Team members Rich Savitt, Paul Leek, Paul Roe, Patrick Meagher, Doug Auslander, Barbara and Eddie Kasper combined to raise $2,386 for the benefit of the American Diabetes Association as part of their participation in the Ship-to-Shore Tour de Cure on May 31. For their efforts, they were rewarded with the opportunity to do something that would be illegal any other day of the year: ride across the Gerald Desmond and Vincent Thomas bridges of LA Harbor. The fun did not stop there, because waiting on the other side was a very scenic and challenging ride around the Palos Verdes Peninsula with dramatic views of the harbors and Catalina Island (somewhat obscured by a misting rain). The 60 mile route included about 3800 feet of climbing (the bridges themselves hover over 180 feet above the water). Although technically it is not a race, it is recognized that Paul Leek was the first to finish the 60 mile distance. He did it in 3:05 with a solo break that began around mile 16. In addition to participating as a fund raiser, Rich Savitt was again involved in route design, logistics and permitting for the event. Other Canyon Velo members who helped make it happen are Barbara and Eddie Kasper who helped mark routes the day before the event and Ed Solomon who drove the rest stop supply vehicle for the 60 mile route on the day of the event. The event drew over 700 riders. Total funds raised by the event are still being calculated but expected to be more than $275,000.
